Shawnee is an excellent metroparks course. From the white tees, the distance is just right for high handicappers. The greens are true and challenging but manageable. The first three holes offer average golfers a good opportunity to gain confidence as you begin your round with an open, easy par 4, followed by a par 3 into a large, slightly-elevated green and then a very short par 4, which would be drivable if not for large bunkers on either side. Even a 20 handicapper can be even or 1 over heading into the daunting fourth hole.
Bogey on number 4 is a great score, as it plays to 450 yards into a narrow fairway. From there, the remainder of the front nine offers little trouble, and it's not inconceivable to come around in the low 40s or high 30s for the single-digit golfers.
It gets tougher on the back, especially 11 and 12, both difficult tee shots with tons of trouble. The greens offer subtle breaks, and the occasionally lip-out can frustrate even the best golfers.
Shawnee is a beautiful course, with plenty of trees, a few ponds, lots of deer and nicely-manicured fairways and first cut. The people are friendly, and you'll be hard-pressed to find this kind of value anywhere else in northeast Ohio.
