6/10 - I did not expect a whole lot from this course before playing it for the first time recently, but the course exceeded my rather low expectations. I warmed up on the facilities driving range and found it adequate. The practice green was okay, and there is a chipping and pitching area additionally. There is a nice clubhouse and snack bar, although I did not use them other than to chat a bit with the pro and pay my fees. I found the course flat as a pancake....no surprise as this is the Texas coastal plain, although there is a fair bit of mounding around the smallish greens. Bunkers guard many of the greens, and the course, being pretty much wide open, can play quite difficult with the often strong winds off the Gulf of Mexico. The course conditions were better than I expected, although far from perfect. The grass around the greens was a bit sparse, and made for tough chipping and pitching, but the green surfaces were okay, if a bit on the slow side. One green had a few bald spots. The fairways and rough were not bad. All in all, especially considering the low cost and friendly staff, I can recommend playing Gulf Winds.
